Have you ever heard the term ‘homestay’? Are you interested in hosting international students from overseas?
Well, you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we will introduce you to the concept of homestay and provide insight into what hosting students is like.
1. What is a Homestay and Who are Host Families?

A homestay is a short-term accommodation arrangement for international students, provided by local families in Australia and New Zealand. These families are known as ‘Host Families.’
Homestay is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience and embrace the real Aussie or Kiwi lifestyle. At the same time, it offers host families a unique cultural experience by welcoming students from different backgrounds into their homes.
2. What do Host Families Do?
Host families are expected to provide a comfortable and welcoming space for their students, helping them adjust to their new environment as if they were a ‘new family member.’
This includes(but not limited to):
- Showing them the location of the nearest train station, bus stop, local shopping centre, and bank.
- Engaging in small conversations with students, such as asking how their day was or what their weekend plans are.
- Preparing meals for students (see the section below for more information).
Host families are not expected to change their lifestyle for the student. Instead, we want students to experience your way of life!
3. What do Host Families Cook for Students?
Students are expected to eat what you normally cook, so host families are not required to prepare special or customised meals (e.g. you don’t need to cook Japanese meals every day for Japanese students).
Students can choose between two meal options: Half-Board and Full-Board.
Half-Board | Breakfast and Dinner Monday to Friday 3 meals on weekends and public holidays |
---|---|
Full-Board | 3 meals every day |
4. Do Host Families Get Paid?
The compensation for host families depends on factors such as the student’s age, meal option, dietary requirements, and the host’s location.
We review our homestay compensation rates annually. Please visit our website to check the latest information for 2025.
